The Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne - 797 Words

Settled in 1630, the Massachusetts Bay Colony housed one thousand refuge Puritans. The Puritans had sailed over to escape religious persecution from England. Born one hundred seventy four years later Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose ancestors arrived at the colony, would become a writer. He started writing at the age of twenty four, but would not peak until he hit his late forty’s. His most famous book written was The Scarlet Letter. The book was originally concepted upon the findings of a paper recalling the events and the scarlet letter. Hawthorne’s book would showcase the Puritans view on the sin of two people and the revenge of another. Portraying the lives of three different people, the strong willed Hester Prynne; the abused clergyman†¦show more content†¦Throughout the book the use Hester as a scapegoat for the sins they have committed. The townspeople are not ugly on the outside, but on the inside. Hester Prynne is the beautiful flower, both inside and out, blooming from the ugliness around her. Hester’s beauty can best be defined by her â€Å"fragrance and fragile beauty.†(46). Described thoroughly by Hawthorne, Hester is a woman of unimaginable beauty. When she had to place the bonnet and letter on her chest her beauty began to change. She was no longer recognised by the beauty of her face, but the beauty within like a rose it has many layers. Not only had her beauty changed but she â€Å"had merely survived out of the stern old wilderness.†(46). The Townspeople also did not make it easy for Hester to survive out on the scaffold and after. They wanted to whip her, take away pearl, and burn her. With all of the threats coming her way Hester thought about killing herself, yet she never could because of those she loved. She grew stronger through the harsh words and glances. As the chapters went on Hester began to change due to the letter on her chest. The emotions she feels due to the letter directly correlate with the shadows and sunlight. With the letter on her chest Hester’s moods lean on the darker side, Pearl once explained that, â€Å"the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself.† (165). The sunshine represents the good and the innocent, like Pearl. The light runs away from Hester

Archaeology Has Proved the Historicity of the Trojan...

Archaeology has proved the historicity of the Trojan War. Discuss Â… he [Heinrich Schliemann] found layers of ruins Â… and two bore unmistakable signs of violent destruction. One of these layers, the seventh according to more recent excavators, was no doubt the city of Priam and Hector. The historicity of the Homeric tale had been demonstrated archaeologically. - M.I. Finley, the World of Odysseus Introduction The Trojan War and its characters are detailed in the writings of Homer, Vergil, Dante and many others. It is a fantastical tale of a decade-long siege of a powerful city by a massive pan-hellenic force. However, even though it has proved to be such a rich source of inspiration for writers, poets and artists throughout†¦show more content†¦These incidents of divine intervention were added in order to add further drama and emphasise the scale of the struggle for victory. I personally think that Heroditus version of the Trojan War is the closest to the truth. When he was writing his Histories he had access to sources we did not, like the priests he mentioned in the above quotation. His version of events, though it may not be completely accurate, is highly feasible and fits with our existing knowledge of the Mycenaean period. Archaeological evidence If Homers writings are central to our understanding of the Trojan War, so are Heinrich Schliemanns digs. His name is synonymous with Troy. Fascinated with Homer, he made it his mission to discover Troy, and eventually did. However, his problems with convincing his fellow academics and archaeologists that he had indeed Troy is similar to the problem we have with defining what the Trojan War actually is. Homers Trojan War could not have possibly happened as it is laid out in the Iliad and the Odyssey. There are jarring incongruities between what happens in his epics, and what happened in that period of Greek history. In like manner, if Apollo vouchsafe me glory and I slay your champion, I will strip him of his armour and take it to the city of Ilius, where I will hang it in the temple of Apollo, but I will give up his body, that the Achaeans may bury him at their ships, and the build him a mound by the wide waters of

Exocytosis in Paramecium Free Essays

In Paramecium caudate, trichinosis are IOWA secretors vesicles that are released from the cytoplasm. We first observed how the presence of Alicia blue dye triggers normal secretion of trichinosis, and we then tested four different hypotheses in order to determine how the presence of Ca++ ions in the extracurricular and intracellular environment affects the secretion of trichinosis. Our first our hypothesis tested whether extracurricular calcium is required for the secretion of trichinosis by reading cells with EST. We will write a custom essay sample on Exocytosis in Paramecium or any similar topic only for you Order Now , an agent that blocks calcium ions; our second tested whether increased calcium will counter the inhibitory effects of EST.; our third tested whether adding different ion, like Magic, can also counter the inhibitory effects of EST.; and our fourth hypothesis tested whether the release of intracellular calcium by adding caffeine or oenophile affects exoticism. Our results demonstrate that exoticism of tricycles is dependent on the presence of calcium ions in both the intracellular and extracurricular environments. Introduction: Exoticism in eukaryotic cells is the process in which macromolecular material is released from the cell into the extracurricular environment; one example of exoticism is the secretion of trichinosis in paramecium. Trichinosis are secreted from the cell as a defense mechanism when certain stimuli are introduced into the extracurricular environment. The secretion of trichinosis is controlled by the presence of Ca*+ ions within the plasma membrane and in the extracurricular environment. The purpose of our experiment was to observe the extent to which exoticism is pendant on the presence of extracurricular and intracellular calcium ions, and to determine if other extracurricular ions can have the same effect as calcium. The cells were first treated with 0. 03% Alicia blue dye, which triggers normal exoticism. Cells were then treated with EST., an agent that inhibits calcium, in order to observe how triptychs secretion is affected when calcium ions are sequestered. Additional calcium ions were added to the extracurricular environment to determine if the effects f EST. could be countered by increasing calcium. The cells were then exposed to a different ion, Magic, to observe if a different ion could have the same promoting effect in the extracurricular environment as calcium. Finally, the effect of intracellular calcium was tested by treating cells with a calcium oenophile (A23187) and caffeine, which both stimulate the processing of calcium into the cytoplasm of a cell. Results: Table 1: Observations of triptychs secretion in Paramecium caudate. Data show owe a small sample of cells on a microscope slide responded to the addition of 0. 03% Alcott blue dye, 7. 5 run EST., 0. 14 run A23187 in 1% DMS, 50 run caffeine, and 25 mm magnesium chloride (Magic). The data were obtained by viewing cells under a microscope; the cells were counted prior to treatment and the number of cells secreting trichinosis was counted after treatment. Consequences of Mandatory Corporate Sustainability

Question: Discuss about the Consequences of Mandatory Corporate Sustainability. Answer: Introduction: The Eagle Food is an Australian company that produces organic foods like cereals, dried fruits. The company also specializes in manufacturing and supply of wholegrain products, which includes Tortillas, chapattis, and other food retail service. The product line of the company can also offer the opportunity of private labeling that helps to manufacture the product according to the choice of the customers (Eaglefoodsaustralia.com.au, 2016). The packing process that is needed for these foods is one of the basic requirements to maintain sustainability in the process of business. The sustainability report of Eagle Valley Healthy Foods is intended to provide relevant information regarding the economic, social and environmental elements of the organization. Moreover, it helps to improve the level of commitment to manage organizational risks and financial performance of a company (Ioannou and Serafeim 2014).The sustainability in the business is one of the major responsibilities of all business organizations that help to improve the social reputation of the company (Falck and Heblich 2007). The Eagle Valley Food is located on the outskirts of the city of Perth, and the company has two major warehouses that are built using the corrugated iron material that results in the high temperature during summer and low temperature during the cold days. Hence, the company has to spend high electricity cost for maintaining proper temperature within the warehouse that will help to preserve the quality of the products. The managers of the company also reported that the company needs huge supply fresh water for the manufacture of the healthy bars, which is one the major area of concerns. The main purpose of the company is to focus is to meet the demand of the stakeholders by using the process of sustainable development. The company has successfully able to maintain a healthy environment in the workplace of the company. This has helped to increase the potential of the employees of the enterprise. The main issues that are faced by the company in sustainability issues as there is a significant rise in the demand of energy due to opening of new stores and the warehouses. The annual cost for the energy for the company during the years of 2012 and 2013 were 100 million and 120 million Australian dollars. However, the annual cost in 2015 has been reported to be 195 million Australia dollars. The main product of the company is foods that are healthy in nature. Hence, with the rise of health-conscious among the people of Australia, the company has been able to make improve the sell performance. Nevertheless, the company uses substances like polypropylene in the packing of the foods. According to Sun (2016), being a synthetic polymer, the polypropylene has the potential of UV exposure and harm the quality of food that as sold as processed items and thereby has adverse effects on the health status of the consumers. The company Conclusion: The Eagle Health Foods need to improve the sustainable plans of the company in order to maintain healthy reputation in the market and increase the financial performance of the company. As the demand for energy has gone up significantly, the company needs to incorporate the use of alternative non-conventional form of energy. The CEO of the company must install the solar cells in the warehouse of the company that will help to reduce the demand of the thermal form of energy. The materials that are used in the building the structure of warehouse needs to have the capability to maintain a fixed temperature for longer duration. The packing of the food is also the major area of concern for the company. The materials that are used in the packing of the food materials need to be of high quality and can be recycled, which will help in the conservation of natural resources. The use of bio-degradable and eco-friendly materials for packing will ensure that the nutritional values of the food that are produced by the company are maintained (Grnman et al. 2013). The CEO of the company will have to get the ISO certification in all the food packages and thereby help to gain the trust of the local consumers. It is the social responsibility of the company to follow the guidelines of sustainable development in order to protect the business environment. Reference Eaglefoodsaustralia.com.au. (2016).
